Ellen Ekh Åkesson

In autumn 2019, Ellen Ehk Åkesson was the first recipient of the Ulrica Hydman Vallien Foundation scholarship. The award included an invitation to carry out her own experiments in the blowing room at Orrefors Kosta Boda.

Ellen was born in the area around the glassworks, but still chose to study pottery at the School of Design and Crafts (HDK) in Gothenburg and Capellagården on Öland. Today she has her studio in the former blowing room at Pukeberg in Nybro.

Her entire life, Ellen has felt a sense of fellowship with the untouched ancient forest, which has been her primary inspiration and the reason she has devoted her artistry to exploring organic forms. Her experimental way of working has given her a unique artistic expression.

“The inspiration comes as much from nature and the organic forms I find there as it does from the properties of the glass itself. Seeing forms transformed through bubbles – air that pushes out something soft and stretchable from inside, and the form that pushes back.”

Gyromitra comes from the words “gyro”, or “complex”, and “mitra”, which means “turban” – and gyromitra esculenta is also known as the turban fungus. The work is part of a series.
