Maria Bang Espersen intro

Maria Bang Espersen

My work represents a constant struggle to achieve diversity and opportunities, and a reminder that things can be different than what they currently are. I work with the idea that all things are formable, like glass, and that nothing can be permanently defined as right or wrong.

My experimental work in glass is thus not merely a technique but also a statement. One that tells us never to get stuck in restrictive norms or follow established hierarchies. That we should instead free ourselves from other people’s limitations and transform them into positive shapes. My work is a play on the opportunities within the material, and the result often breaks classical rules about what is permitted in glass. I use cracked glass in many of my works, either as an aesthetic comment or as a statement of change, development and opportunity.
